What is Bulnesene?

Bulnesene is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon with a deep, woody-cedar aroma that tends to anchor and warm a strain's scent profile. The formula is C15H24, placing it in the same weight class as caryophyllene and humulene, and its structure is a seven-membered ring with a two-carbon side chain โ€” the azulene-type scaffold that also underpins the characteristic blue colour of some essential oils distilled at high temperatures.

It is found in guaiacum resinous wood (which once supplied a material called lignum vitae, literally "wood of life," used in early medicine), ylang-ylang blossoms, and some members of the Compositae family. In cannabis it is a minor constituent that is more likely to appear on extended R&D panels than on standard compliance-only panels.

Guaiacum wood, from tropical trees of the genus Guaiacum native to the Caribbean and Central America, is extraordinarily dense (it sinks in water) and was historically prized for self-lubricating marine bearings and propeller shaft bushings. The wood's essential oil is rich in sesquiterpene alcohols and hydrocarbons including bulnesene and the related compound bulnesol. Guaiacum was also used as a traditional remedy against a variety of conditions in the 15th-to-18th centuries, and it became a major export from the New World to Europe.
