Dosing 101: Start Low, Go Slow
The golden rule of cannabis consumption. Learn how to find your ideal dose whether you're smoking, vaping, or eating edibles.
The Golden Rule
"Start low, go slow" is the single most important piece of cannabis advice. Everyone's endocannabinoid system is different — what works for your friend may be way too much (or too little) for you. The goal is to find your minimum effective dose: the smallest amount that gives you the experience you want.
Inhalation (Flower & Vape)
Effects begin within 1-5 minutes and peak around 15-30 minutes. Start with 1-2 small puffs, then wait at least 15 minutes before taking more. For flower, a single hit from a pipe or joint is a good starting point. For vape pens, take a short 2-3 second draw.
Edibles
Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in and last 4-8 hours. Start with 2.5-5mg of THC — this is considered a "microdose." Wait at least 2 full hours before taking more. The most common mistake is eating more because you "don't feel anything yet." Many people find their sweet spot between 5-15mg, but some need as little as 1-2mg.
Concentrates
Concentrates (dabs, wax, shatter) are extremely potent — often 60-90% THC compared to 15-25% for flower. These are not recommended for beginners. If you do try them, start with a piece no bigger than a grain of rice.
Tinctures & Oils
Sublingual tinctures (held under the tongue) take effect in 15-45 minutes. Start with the smallest marked dose on the dropper — usually 0.25-0.5 mL. Hold under your tongue for 60 seconds before swallowing for fastest absorption.
