Australia: from licensed grower to pharmacy counter, what proves it is safe
Play it: the batch moves through Australia's medical pathway on the left, and each proof-of-safety snaps onto the product on the right, color-coded by who adds it.

The big idea: Australia has no legal recreational market, yet it runs one of the world's biggest medical ones, and the trick is that "unapproved" does not mean untested. Almost every product skips the national register and reaches patients through a doctor's Special Access or Authorised Prescriber pathway, but it still must clear TGO 93, a mandatory standard using European Pharmacopoeia methods, so even an unapproved oil carries pharmacopoeia-grade testing. The newest safety lever is aimed at people, not product: after some telehealth doctors wrote thousands of scripts, regulators tightened who is allowed to prescribe at all.

Step by step: Australia
- Step 1: Licensed cultivation (Cultivator) A grower needs a national license from the Office of Drug Control just to cultivate cannabis. No license, no legal crop.
- Step 2: GMP manufacture (Manufacturer) The maker must hold a Good Manufacturing Practice license, the same quality benchmark used for other medicines, before it can process a batch.
- Step 3: TGO 93 batch testing (Lab) Every batch must meet TGO 93, the Standard for Medicinal Cannabis, testing cannabinoid content plus pesticides, heavy metals, microbes, aflatoxins and residual solvents, using European Pharmacopoeia methods. Adds to the label: Potency + contaminant results, batch number.
- Step 4: Prescription authorized (TGA) Almost everything is an unapproved therapeutic good, so a doctor gets TGA permission through the Special Access or Authorised Prescriber pathway. THC is a controlled drug, CBD is prescription-only. Adds to the label: Pathway + prescription-only status.
- Step 5: Pharmacy dispenses (Pharmacy) A pharmacy dispenses it only on a valid prescription or approval. Nothing crosses the counter without one. Adds to the label: Dispensing record.
Frequently asked questions
Who tests cannabis in Australia?
Every batch of Australian medicinal cannabis must meet TGO 93, the Standard for Medicinal Cannabis, which tests cannabinoid content plus pesticides, heavy metals, microbes, aflatoxins and residual solvents using European Pharmacopoeia methods. Almost every product is an unapproved therapeutic good, but unapproved does not mean untested: it still clears TGO 93 before a pharmacy dispenses it.
Who pulls the sample in Australia?
Australia's walkthrough has no separate sampling firm: the grower holds a national cultivation license from the Office of Drug Control, the manufacturer holds a Good Manufacturing Practice license, and each batch is tested to TGO 93. A doctor then gets TGA permission through the Special Access or Authorised Prescriber pathway, and the pharmacy dispenses only on that prescription.
What has to be on a cannabis label in Australia?
An Australian package shows the ODC cultivation license and GMP manufacturing license, the batch number, the CBD and THC content from TGO 93 testing with the contaminant screen within limits, the supply notice (unapproved therapeutic good under a Special Access or Authorised Prescriber pathway, prescription-only, THC a controlled drug, keep out of reach of children), and the pharmacy dispensing line.
