What is Thymol?

Thymol is the molecule that makes thyme smell like thyme. A monoterpene phenol with the formula C10H14O, it is built on the same ten-carbon cymene skeleton as carvacrol but carries its hydroxyl (OH) group at a different position โ€” position 2 versus position 5. That single positional difference gives the two isomers distinctly different aromas: thymol is sharper, more medicinal, and more thyme-like; carvacrol is warmer, more oregano-like.

In cannabis, thymol is a trace-level terpene found on extended R&D and forensics panels. It appears at detectable levels in some phenotypes โ€” particularly those with pronounced herbal or medicinal scent notes โ€” and its presence is worth noting on a COA even at small percentages because its aroma detection threshold is very low.

The chemistry of culinary herbs

Thymol is the dominant compound (40-50%) in the essential oil of common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and contributes to the characteristic scent of other Lamiaceae species: savory, marjoram, and oregano. The oil of wild thyme has been used antiseptically since antiquity โ€” without anyone knowing why it worked. The answer, of course, is thymol, which disrupts bacterial and fungal cell membranes. Listerine, one of the oldest commercial mouthwashes (formulated in 1879), contains thymol as one of its four active ingredients and still does today. Thymol is the reason Listerine smells the way it does.

Terpene and organic pesticide

Thymol occupies an unusual position in cannabis testing: it is both a naturally occurring terpene and an active ingredient in registered organic pesticides used against Varroa mites in beekeeping and against various plant pathogens. Some cannabis COA panels include it as a potential pesticide residue to screen for, while extended terpene panels report it as an aroma compound. The two uses are analytically separate (a pesticide residue panel and a terpene panel measure different things), but the dual role is worth understanding when interpreting COA data.
