What is Menthone?
If menthol is the cooling, crystalline face of peppermint, menthone is the molecule doing the setup work. A monoterpenoid ketone with the formula C10H18O, menthone shares the same ten-carbon skeleton as menthol but carries a ketone (C=O) group where menthol has an alcohol (OH). That one functional-group swap makes all the difference: menthol is soothing and cold, while menthone is sharper, slightly more herbal and woody, with a clean mint character that reads less sweet.
Plants build menthone as a direct biochemical step on the way to making menthol. In peppermint, the enzyme menthone reductase converts menthone to menthol almost as fast as it is made, so the ratio of the two shifts with the plant's age, growing conditions, and harvest timing. Young peppermint leaves carry more menthone; fully mature leaves tilt toward menthol.

In cannabis, menthone is a minor constituent that occasionally registers on extended terpene panels, contributing a cool, clarifying edge to strains already rich in menthol or pulegone.
Why ketones smell different from alcohols
Chemists describe the olfactory difference between menthone and menthol through polarity and vapor pressure. Ketones are generally more volatile than alcohols of similar size because they lack the hydrogen-bond donor that holds alcohol molecules together in the liquid. That means menthone reaches your nose quickly with a sharp, clean impact, while menthol clings longer and leaves its characteristic cool aftersensation. Neither compound triggers the cold-sensing TRPM8 receptor in isolation at normal sniffing concentrations โ the "coldness" you feel from menthol comes from high concentrations acting on skin and mucous membranes, not from the terpene in a cannabis flower.
