What is Farnesol?
Farnesol is easy to mix up with farnesene because the names differ by just three letters, but they are different compounds with different aromas. Farnesene (C15H24) is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon with a green-apple, slightly woody scent. Farnesol (C15H26O) is the corresponding alcohol โ softer, more floral, with a musky lily-of-the-valley character that makes it one of the most widely used base-note ingredients in fine fragrances.
Both are built from three isoprene units, but farnesol carries a hydroxyl (OH) group on the terminal carbon of the chain that fundamentally changes its volatility, polarity, and aroma. It is also a key biosynthetic waypoint: farnesol is the sesquiterpene precursor from which plants synthesise nerolidol and a wide range of other sesquiterpene alcohols.

Farnesol carries a scent profile described as floral, musky, lily-of-the-valley. Terpenes like this one shape both how a cannabis flower smells and much of its perceived character.
Where else Farnesol is found
Farnesol is not unique to cannabis. It also occurs naturally in Ylang-ylang, Rose, Citrus blossoms, Chamomile. That shared chemistry is why these foods and herbs can smell or taste similar, and it is a good way to recognize the aroma in everyday life.

Ylang-ylang, rose, neroli, cyclamen, and many other florals contain measurable farnesol. Perfumers prize it as a fixative and as a contributor to the heavy, honeyed richness of white-floral accords. The compound's relatively low volatility means it evaporates slowly from skin and fabric, helping anchor the lighter, faster-fading top notes. The fragrance industry produces farnesol both from natural ylang-ylang oil and synthetically, consuming hundreds of tonnes per year in fine fragrance, cosmetics, and detergents.
A biosynthetic signal and a quorum-sensing molecule
Farnesol has an unusual dual life in biology. In plants it is a sesquiterpene alcohol produced from farnesyl pyrophosphate and a biosynthetic precursor to larger sesquiterpenes including nerolidol, germacradiene, and many others. In fungi, it functions as a quorum-sensing molecule: Candida albicans secretes farnesol to signal population density and suppress formation of invasive filamentous growth. That antifungal-signalling role is part of why laboratory studies have explored farnesol's effects on fungal pathogens, though those findings are in vitro and not a basis for medical claims.
