What is Eudesmol?

Eudesmol is a sesquiterpene alcohol found in eucalyptus, calamus root, and camphor oil, and it comes in three isomeric forms โ€” alpha, beta, and gamma โ€” that share the same formula (C15H26O) and the same eudesmane skeleton but differ in the position of the hydroxyl group and the geometry of their ring junctions. All three have a characteristic earthy, woody, and faintly cedar-like aroma, somewhat reminiscent of a dry eucalyptus oil without the sharp cineole overlay.

In cannabis, eudesmol is a trace terpene reported on forensic-grade HS-FET GC/MS panels (including the 45-analyte method published in PMC12796564) and on some extended R&D panels. It is not a headline terpene in most cultivars but appears in the base-note region of complex profiles.

The three forms of eudesmol โ€” alpha (ฮฑ), beta (ฮฒ), and gamma (ฮณ) โ€” differ in where the OH group sits on the ten-ring system and in the relative configuration at ring junction carbons. Beta-eudesmol is the most studied and the most commonly found in natural sources. It is a constituent of Atractylodes lancea, a herb used in East Asian traditional medicine, and of the essential oil of various Eucalyptus species. Gamma-eudesmol has been identified in calamus (Acorus calamus) root oil. On cannabis COA panels, the isomers may be reported individually or summed, depending on the lab.
