What is Eudesmol?
Eudesmol is a sesquiterpene alcohol found in eucalyptus, calamus root, and camphor oil, and it comes in three isomeric forms โ alpha, beta, and gamma โ that share the same formula (C15H26O) and the same eudesmane skeleton but differ in the position of the hydroxyl group and the geometry of their ring junctions. All three have a characteristic earthy, woody, and faintly cedar-like aroma, somewhat reminiscent of a dry eucalyptus oil without the sharp cineole overlay.
In cannabis, eudesmol is a trace terpene reported on forensic-grade HS-FET GC/MS panels (including the 45-analyte method published in PMC12796564) and on some extended R&D panels. It is not a headline terpene in most cultivars but appears in the base-note region of complex profiles.
Aroma and flavor
Eudesmol carries a scent profile described as earthy, woody, cedar. Terpenes like this one shape both how a cannabis flower smells and much of its perceived character.
Where else Eudesmol is found
Eudesmol is not unique to cannabis. It also occurs naturally in Eucalyptus, Calamus, Camphor. That shared chemistry is why these foods and herbs can smell or taste similar, and it is a good way to recognize the aroma in everyday life.

Three isomers, one name
The three forms of eudesmol โ alpha (ฮฑ), beta (ฮฒ), and gamma (ฮณ) โ differ in where the OH group sits on the ten-ring system and in the relative configuration at ring junction carbons. Beta-eudesmol is the most studied and the most commonly found in natural sources. It is a constituent of Atractylodes lancea, a herb used in East Asian traditional medicine, and of the essential oil of various Eucalyptus species. Gamma-eudesmol has been identified in calamus (Acorus calamus) root oil. On cannabis COA panels, the isomers may be reported individually or summed, depending on the lab.
Part of the sesquiterpene alcohol family
Eudesmol belongs to the same biochemical family as nerolidol, farnesol, and bisabolol: all are sesquiterpene alcohols derived from farnesyl pyrophosphate, the universal fifteen-carbon building block of sesquiterpene chemistry. Its eudesmane skeleton is one of the most common sesquiterpene ring systems in nature, found across hundreds of plant species. The compound's relatively high molecular weight and the presence of an OH group make it slow to evaporate, which is why eudesmol-containing strains may retain an earthy, cedar depth even after the lighter monoterpenes have faded.
