What is Citral?

Slice a lemon and that bright, razor-sharp citrus hit you get? That is largely citral at work. Chemically, citral is not a single compound but a natural mixture of two geometric isomers: geranial (the trans form, also called citral A) and neral (the cis form, citral B). Both carry the same formula (C10H16O) and the same carbonyl-tipped ten-carbon skeleton, and together they account for the clean, intensely lemony character of lemongrass, lemon myrtle, Kaffir lime leaves, and candied-citrus flavors worldwide.

The isomers usually coexist in roughly 60:40 (geranial:neral) proportions, and the two are chemically interconverted by mild acids or enzymes in the plant. Because of that relationship, a COA report may list them individually as geranial and neral or lump them together as citral, depending on the lab's integration method.

Did you know? Citral is also the direct biosynthetic precursor of the ionones, the group of aroma molecules responsible for the scent of violets and one of the key aroma notes in Chanel No. 5. The same ten-carbon chain that makes lemongrass smell lemony is, a few enzymatic steps later, making a luxury perfume smell floral.

Citral is not unique to cannabis. It also occurs naturally in Lemongrass, Lemon myrtle, Citrus peels, Melissa. That shared chemistry is why these foods and herbs can smell or taste similar, and it is a good way to recognize the aroma in everyday life.

From lemongrass to flavour chemistry

Lemongrass oil can contain 70 to 85 percent citral by weight, making it the commercial source for most of the citral used in fragrance and flavour production. From there the molecule is a feedstock: industrial chemistry converts it into ionones (the violet-smelling aroma compounds in perfumery), into vitamin A, and into menthol through a sequence of condensation and reduction steps. Lemon myrtle, Kaffir lime leaves, and lemon verbena are other high-citral natural sources. In cannabis, citral is a minor but distinctly citrus-forward terpene; strains already rich in limonene may carry small amounts of citral as an amplifier of that lemon character.

Why citral smells so intensely lemony

Human olfaction is unusually sensitive to citral: the detection threshold is roughly 40 parts per billion in air, which means a tiny amount produces a pronounced effect. The aldehyde functional group (CHO at the end of the carbon chain) binds strongly to olfactory receptor OR1A1, the same receptor that responds to geraniol and linalool, but the carbonyl makes the interaction faster and more intense than the corresponding alcohol. That is why lemon flavors in food and drink use citral-rich oils rather than squeezing actual lemons: you get maximum lemon impact with much smaller quantities.

Research is limited. Lab studies have found antimicrobial and antifungal activity. As with most trace terpenes in cannabis, its independent effect on the human experience is not well characterised.
