What is Carvacrol?
Carvacrol is the main reason oregano smells like oregano. A monoterpene phenol with formula C10H14O, it is the positional isomer of thymol: both share the same atoms and the same cymene backbone, but carvacrol puts the hydroxyl (OH) group at position 5 on the ring while thymol puts it at position 2. That single positional swap gives carvacrol a warmer, rounder, slightly more pungent character compared to thymol's sharper, cleaner thyme edge.
In cannabis, carvacrol is a trace-level terpene found on extended R&D and forensics panels. Like thymol, its presence on a COA panel can reflect either a naturally occurring terpene or the use of certain organic products in cultivation โ the analytical distinction lies in which panel was run and the concentrations involved.
Aroma and flavor
Carvacrol carries a scent profile described as oregano, warm, herbal. Terpenes like this one shape both how a cannabis flower smells and much of its perceived character.
Where else Carvacrol is found
Carvacrol is not unique to cannabis. It also occurs naturally in Oregano, Marjoram, Thyme. That shared chemistry is why these foods and herbs can smell or taste similar, and it is a good way to recognize the aroma in everyday life.

The oregano molecule
Oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil contains 50-80% carvacrol in most commercial cultivars. Greek and Turkish oregano cultivars typically run highest; Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) is a different species but similarly rich. Thyme, savory, and some marjoram varieties contribute smaller amounts. Carvacrol's antimicrobial potency against foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli has made it the subject of considerable food-safety research, and oregano-oil supplements marketed for antimicrobial effects owe their activity mainly to carvacrol. Those extrapolations from in-vitro petri dish results to human oral supplementation are much weaker than the marketing suggests.
Structural relationship to thymol
Thymol and carvacrol are the terpene world's most discussed positional isomers. They are biosynthetically related through a common pathway from p-cymene. Plants convert cymene to either thymol or carvacrol depending on which enzyme handles the hydroxylation step. The two compounds often coexist in the same plant, with the ratio depending on the specific enzyme variant expressed. Analytical chemists can distinguish them by GC retention time, and well-run terpene panels report them as separate peaks.
