Indica, Sativa & Hybrid: What's the Difference?
The classic strain categories explained — plus why terpenes might matter more than the label.
The Traditional View
Indica strains are traditionally associated with relaxation, body highs, and sleepiness — the "in da couch" effect. Sativa strains are linked to energy, creativity, and cerebral highs. Hybrids fall somewhere in between, combining traits from both.
The Modern View
Cannabis researchers now believe the indica/sativa distinction is more about plant morphology (how the plant looks and grows) than about effects. A short, bushy plant (indica) doesn't necessarily produce more sedating effects than a tall, thin plant (sativa).
What Actually Matters: Terpenes & Cannabinoids
The effects you feel are driven by the specific combination of cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBN, etc.) and terpenes (myrcene, limonene, linalool, etc.) in each strain. Myrcene-dominant strains tend to be more sedating regardless of whether they're labeled indica or sativa. Limonene-rich strains tend to be more uplifting.
How to Use Labels
Indica/sativa labels are still a useful starting point — they give you a rough idea of what to expect. But for a more accurate prediction, look at the strain's terpene profile and cannabinoid content on its detail page in WeedCentral.
