The Complete Guide to Edibles
Everything you need to know about cannabis edibles — how they work, how to dose, and what to do if you take too much.
How Edibles Work
When you eat cannabis, THC passes through your digestive system and is metabolized by the liver into 11-hydroxy-THC — a molecule that crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively than regular THC. This is why edibles feel different (and often stronger) than smoking.
Dosing Guide
1-2.5mg: Microdose. Subtle effects, good for focus and mild relief.
5mg: Standard low dose. Noticeable relaxation and euphoria.
10mg: Standard dose. Clear psychoactive effects.
15-25mg: Strong. Experienced users.
25mg+: Very strong. High tolerance only.
Timing Is Everything
Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, depending on your metabolism, what you've eaten, and the product. Eating on an empty stomach speeds onset but can intensify effects. A light meal 30-60 minutes before can smooth the experience.
If You Take Too Much
It's uncomfortable but not dangerous. Find a calm, safe place. Drink water. Chew black peppercorns (caryophyllene may help counteract THC anxiety). Remind yourself it will pass — typically within 2-4 hours. CBD can help moderate THC effects if available. Sleep it off if you can.
Types of Edibles
Gummies and chocolates are the most popular, but the market now includes beverages, mints, capsules, honey, and even savory snacks. Beverages tend to have faster onset (15-30 min) due to nano-emulsion technology. Always check the label for total THC content AND per-serving size.
